The effect of magnetocrystalline anisotropy on the domain structure of patterned Fe2CrSi Heusler alloy thin films

2013

The effects of magnetic anisotropy on domain structures in half-metallic Heusler alloy Fe2CrSi thin film elements were investigated using high resolution x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photoemission electron microscopy. The transition of the dominating contribution from the magnetocrystalline anisotropy to the shape anisotropy is observed in square-shaped elements when reducing the size below 2.0–2.5 μm. In particular, we identify in disk-shaped Heusler elements the vortex state as the ground state. The shape-anisotropy dominated, well-defined magnetization configuration shows the potential of the Fe2CrSi Heusler alloy for applications in vortex-core- or domain-wall-devices, where the hi…

Unusual domain-wall motion in ferromagnetic semiconductor films with tetragonal anisotropy

2009

International audience; Magnetic field-driven domain-wall propagation in the flow regime is investigated in (Ga, Mn) As ferromagnetic semiconductor layers. Square-shape magnetic domains with an unexpected orientation of their edges, at pi/8 with respect to the anisotropy axes, are found. This is shown to arise from the effect of tetragonal magnetic anisotropy on domain-wall dynamics. Using a one-dimensional model for domain-wall motion and modeling domain growth by contour dynamics the shape and orientation of domains and their field range for existence are well reproduced. These results point to the key role of the vectorial nature of the order parameter in the dynamics of ferromagnetic do…

Temperature-induced martensite in magnetic shape memory Fe2MnGa observed by photoemission electron microscopy

2012

The magnetic domain structure in single crystals of a Heusler shape memory compound near the composition Fe2MnGa was observed during phase transition by photoelectron emission microscopy at Beamline 11.0.1.1 of the Advanced Light Source. The behavior is comparable with recent observations of an adaptive martensite phase in prototype Ni2MnGa, although the pinning in the recent work is an epitaxial interface and in this work the effective pinning plane is a boundary between martensitic variants that transform in a self-accommodating way from the single crystal austenite phase present at high temperatures. Temperature dependent observations of the twinning structure give information as to the …

Electronic and Magnetic Properties of Li1.5Mn0.5As Alloys in the Cu2Sb Structure

2013

We investigated two formula-units of Li1.5Mn0.5As alloys, such as Li3MnAs2, in the Cu2Sb crystal structure using an ab-initio algorithm. By interchanging Mn with each Li located at different positions of the Li4As2unit cell, four separate alloys are formed. At the optimized lattice constant, two of these alloys are predicted to be ferromagnetic metals and the other two are half metals. The possibility of half metallicity in the first two is also explored. Both the modified Slater-Pauling-Kübler rule and the ionic model can characterize the magnetic moments of the half metals.

Epitaxial films of the magnetic shape memory material

2007

Abstract By DC-sputtering from a stoichiometric target onto sapphire substrates we prepared epitaxial films of Ni 2 MnGa . X-ray diffraction in two circle geometry shows only the Ni 2 MnGa peaks corresponding to a (1 1 0) oriented growth on the (1 1 0) oriented sapphire substrate. Rocking curve scans shows that the out of plane orientation has a width of only 1 . 1 ∘ . By four circle X-ray diffraction we find an in-plane aligned growth. The Curie temperature as determined by SQUID magnetometry is 368 K. On cooling down the low field magnetization drops at around 260–280 K indicating the austenite to martensite transition. The presence of two different phases at high and low temperature also…

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Epitaxial Ni2MnGa Thin Films

2009

We report on the preparation and investigation of epitaxial thin films of the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni2MnGa. For samples close to the stoichiometric composition we find that the phase transformation temperature is affected by the crystallographic orientation. Changes in the crystal structure due to the transformation are observed using temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction. Films with higher manganese content are in the martensitic state at room temperature. Those samples on Al2O3(11-20) reveal the 7-layered orthorhombic structure that allows strains up to 10 %. To avoid blocking of magnetostrictive effects by the substrate, free-standing films are prepared using water-soluble NaCl(…

Microstructure of freestanding single-crystalline Ni2MnGa thin films

2011

Abstract The complex crystal structure and variant distribution of single-crystalline freestanding Ni–Mn–Ga films was studied in detail using X-ray diffraction in two- and four-circle geometry. Selective chemical etching of a chromium buffer layer facilitates the release of the rigid MgO substrate that would inhibit magnetically induced reorientation (MIR) of variants. The substrate-constrained as well as the freestanding films possess identical crystal structure featuring a seven-layered (pseudo-)orthorhombic modulation (7 M/14 M). Of the 12 different variants observed before and after releasing the film from the substrate, four are predominantly represented. These have the short c -axis a…

Correlation of quenched structural disorder and magnetism inTiFe2Laves-phase thin films

2002

In recent bandstructure calculations for the $C14$ Laves-phase intermetallic compound ${\mathrm{TiFe}}_{2}$ two energetically nearly degenerate magnetic ground states (antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic) were predicted. As a consequence of this near-degeneracy in the $C14$ stability range of ${\mathrm{Ti}}_{x}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$ $(x\ensuremath{\approx}1/3)$ the magnetic properties are strongly correlated with the sublattices' occupation by Ti and Fe. We analyzed the magnetic properties of a series of thin epitaxial films with varying composition in the $C14$ stability range. The temperature- and field-dependent magnetic properties of these samples were determined by dc superc…

Electronic structure of the austenitic and martensitic state of magnetocaloric Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloy films

2013

Changes of the electronic and magnetic structure near the martensitic phase transition of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys doped with Co are investigated by experiment and theory. The nonstoichiometric Ni${}_{48}$Co${}_{5}$Mn${}_{35}$In${}_{12}$ epitaxial film undergoes a transition from a weakly magnetic martensitic phase below ${T}_{m}=350$ K to a ferromagnetic austenitic phase above ${T}_{m}$. Element-specific magnetic moments and the unoccupied density of states function is investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We find an antiparallel alignment of Mn and Ni/Co magnetic moments in both phases. The electronic structure is calculated using the SPR-KKR Green's function approach consi…

Control of the Magnetic Configuration of Ferromagnetic Nanostructures Across the Structural Phase Transition of Vanadium Dioxide

2016

We investigate the effect of the structural phase transition in VO 2 in magnetoelastically coupled heterostructures of VO 2 and Ni. Continuous and nano-patterned Ni layers were used, and we found reversible and reproducible magnetic domain switching induced by the VO 2 structural phase transition. The magnetic states of the nano-patterned ferromagnetic elements were dominated by topographic features which generated strong pinning but still allowed for a reversible switching between the states. Our measurements constitute a key step for the use of the VO 2 phase transition for ultrafast dynamical studies of the inverse mangetostrictive effect, and eventually employing the effect for ultrafas…
